What Step Guide does
Step Guide shows step-by-step guides on websites: an orange ring around what to click and a small card that says what to do. It looks for buttons, links and fields by their visible text, label or placeholder so it can highlight them.
What it does not do
- It does not read what you type or the contents of fields.
- To find what to highlight, it compares the words on the page you are on (button names, labels and other visible text) with the words in the guide. This happens only in your browser, only in the tab the guide runs in, and nothing it looks at is saved or sent anywhere.
- It does not type, fill in or click anything for you.
- It sends no data to us or to anyone else. There is no server, no analytics and no tracking.
What it stores, on your computer only
- The guide files you add (in Chrome's extension storage).
- The guide that is running and its current step, until you finish or close the browser.
- How many of the 10 free runs of your own guides you have used (a number).
When a guide shows a Copy button, the text in that guide is copied to your clipboard when you click it.
Pages on your computer
A setup page served from your own computer (127.0.0.1, ports 7247–7257) can ask Step Guide to start a guide when you click to start it. Unless the guide is approved by Step Guide, you are asked first. Step Guide only tells that page that it is installed and whether the guide started.
